My introduction to commercial gym equipment came through a Slack message in February 2021. Our VP of Operations needed a fitness center for the main office. Short answer: generally, no. HSA funds are for qualified medical expenses as defined by the IRS. Routine gym equipment and gym memberships don't make the list.
There is a nuance. According to IRS Publication 502, eligible expenses include amounts paid for treatment of specific medical conditions. If a physician prescribes exercise to treat a specific diagnosis, some fitness-related costs may be eligible. But the intent matters: if the expense is primarily for general health or fitness, it doesn't qualify, regardless of how it's framed.
I verified this on irs.gov during a 2024 audit of our internal FAQ, and I'd recommend anyone building an employee-facing answer do the same. The rules haven't changed recently, but tax guidance evolves. Don't take a blog's word for it—check Publication 502 directly (source: irs.gov).
Looking Back: What I'd Do Differently
If you're tasked with buying gym equipment—for a company or your own garage—here's the advice that would have saved me weeks:
- Talk to coaches before you contact vendors. I made the mistake of starting with catalogs. The coaches gave me more insight in one hour than a dozen product brochures.
- Cost per year of service beats sticker price. The equipment that seems expensive in 2025 can be the cheapest by 2035.
- Match equipment to your actual users. Our mixed population needed a mix of machines. A gym full of beginners shouldn't have the same setup as a facility for professional athletes.
